Project Summary
Vention (formerly iTechArt) built an offline-first web and local application platform for a residential high-rise building collaboration product, delivering WPF desktop apps, native iOS and Android apps, a middleware product called Connector, and QA support. The engagement began in November 2013 and grew from two engineers to a 23-person team; the client praises the vendor's engineering rigor and professionalism.
Key Challenges
- Needed an app that used local storage and could sync to the website for poor Internet environments
- Required hardware integration so browsers could access printers, webcams, and fingerprint scanners
- Client's internal staff was stretched thin and needed external engineering and QA support
Project Deliverables
- WPF desktop applications
- Native iOS and Android applications
- Middleware product "Connector" to integrate hardware and browsers
- Local database (SQL Express) sync to cloud (Microsoft SQL Server)
- QA services
Project Solution
iTechArt developed a suite of solutions including WPF touchscreen-enabled local applications using Microsoft SQL Express that sync with Microsoft SQL Server-based cloud services, native iOS and Android apps, and a middleware product called Connector that mediates hardware (printers, webcams, fingerprint scanners) with web browsers. They also provided QA and supported deployment and installations, working in two-week sprints with dedicated project managers for mobile and overall coordination. The team scaled from two engineers to 23 over the engagement.
Project Outcome
- Shifted significant development and QA workload to the vendor, enabling internal staff reallocation
- Converted roughly a third of the client's 3,000 customers to the Connector platform with smooth installs and almost no support calls
- Vendor's portion of the company grew faster than the client's own team; drop in support calls for customers who installed Connector
