Project Summary

Railwaymen developed an online marketplace for speech-language therapists (TherapyfindR) using Ruby on Rails, delivering design options and a location-based search feature. The team communicated consistently, resolved geolocation default-radius issues, and produced a site that was well received by therapists and internal stakeholders.

Key Challenges

  • Build a searchable online marketplace to support the business model
  • Implement a reliable location-based search with appropriate default radius handling

Project Deliverables

  • Website built with Ruby on Rails
  • Location-based search allowing zip-code radius queries
  • Page outlines and approved design options from the graphic design team
  • Ongoing tweaks and post-launch adjustments

Project Solution

Initially, they leveraged their graphic design team to provide a couple of site design options. Once we approved this, they proceeded to develop our basic site using Ruby on Rails while also incorporating certain features that we requested. One of the key functions involved a location-based search. Users could input their zip code to set the search radius. At the time, we had difficulties defining the default settings, especially if the results fell outside of the designated radius. Railwaymen’s team addressed the issues and resolved the problem. At the time, we worked directly with their founder, but we also occasionally spoke with one of their designers and a developer. A trusted colleague had worked with them previously and recommended them to us. We were looking at multiple off-shore developers and felt that Railwaymen was the most trustworthy and capable. Our internal coder also felt very comfortable with their team, so we decided to go with them after a few conversations. We spent $10,000–$20,000. Their work lasted from October 2012–January 2014, although the bulk of the work finished earlier and only a few tweaks remained.

Project Outcome

  • Positive reception from speech pathologists who used the platform
  • High client satisfaction and internal praise for the delivered site
  • Strong and consistent communication with weekly calls and timely availability
  • Issues around location-radius defaults were resolved by the team
