Project Summary

iomico was hired to review and improve the embedded firmware of a light-exposure measurement tool and to support production workflows for programming, configuring, and testing devices. The engagement restored production and launch-readiness capabilities, identified and corrected firmware and commissioning issues (including a calibration-related bug), and produced practical recommendations for cloud stability, observability, and longer-term system hardening. The client, Blue Iris Labs, develops wearable and environmental light-exposure measurement tools for researchers, clinicians, and health-focused users.

Key Challenges

  • Stabilize and improve embedded firmware and device commissioning workflows to enable reliable manufacturing programming, configuration, testing, and shipment.
  • Identify and fix causes of cloud and data reliability issues and improve observability and system hardening.
  • Provide technical support across a complex system of wearable sensors, fixed sensors, gateways, cloud services, and manufacturing tools while prioritizing fixes for launch readiness and scalability.

Project Deliverables

  • Reviewing and improving embedded firmware for Speck devices
  • Restoring device commissioning workflows for the contract manufacturer
  • Supporting production programming, configuration, and testing workflows
  • Investigating data upload and gateway reliability issues
  • Reviewing AWS/Firebase cloud infrastructure and identifying bottlenecks
  • Recommending improvements to observability and diagnostics
  • Providing engineering fixes, documentation, and technical recommendations

Project Solution

iomico reviewed and improved embedded firmware for the client's Speck devices and restored device commissioning workflows used by the contract manufacturer. They supported production workflows for programming, configuring, and testing devices; investigated data upload and gateway reliability issues; reviewed parts of the AWS/Firebase cloud infrastructure to identify bottlenecks; and recommended improvements to observability and diagnostics. The vendor identified firmware, cloud, and manufacturing risks affecting launch readiness, supported fixes to calibration and device configuration workflows, and delivered practical engineering improvements, bug fixes, documentation, technical findings, and recommendations to improve production readiness and scalability.

Project Outcome

  • Restored production and launch-readiness capabilities.
  • Manufacturing partner could program, configure, and prepare Speck devices for shipment.
  • Specific firmware and commissioning issues were identified and corrected, including a calibration-related bug affecting Speck W.
  • Confirmed no major cloud-side blockers for the limited early release of Speck W.
  • Investigation clarified weak points in the fixed-sensor system and defined a roadmap for stabilization, observability, QA, and calibration improvements.
