Project Summary

A small software company hired Altamira (formerly GBKSOFT) to build a cross-platform mobile app for Washington State Ferry (WSF) riders using Flutter and Dart. The team integrated the app with the publicly available WSF REST API and implemented caching to account for spotty onboard internet. The project was delivered ahead of schedule for the summer sailing season, with positive customer feedback and organized use of Jira, Confluence and Slack throughout delivery.

Key Challenges

  • Build a mobile application to help riders of the Washington State Ferry (WSF) network
  • Provide an experience suitable for both occasional ferry riders and regular commuters
  • Integrate with the publicly available WSF REST API and implement caching for spotty onboard internet
  • Deliver both iOS and Android versions on Day 1 using Flutter and Dart

Project Deliverables

  • Mobile app for iOS and Android
  • Integration with the WSF REST API with caching
  • Project documentation in Confluence
  • Project management setup in Jira
  • App Store (iTunesConnect) setup support

Project Solution

Altamira was selected based on prior shortlisting and delivered the project as a small, well-defined pilot. The vendor converted a mini-spec into Jira project steps and created Confluence pages for each app component, maintained mid-point check-ins and weekly communication, and executed development sprints using Flutter and Dart. The program management team kept the project on track; additional specialists were engaged as needed (for example, to set up the app on Apple iTunesConnect).

Project Outcome

  • Project completed ahead of schedule in time for the summer sailing season
  • Customer feedback was very positive
  • Client began planning upgrades for a future version of the app
