Project Summary

Tomsk State University engaged Rubius to develop a SCADA system over a three-year engagement in which Rubius provided concept development, architecture, and full implementation of multiple modules with both web and desktop versions. The vendor produced a system that outperformed competitors in performance and reliability, was adaptable across manufacturers and industries, and was delivered with clear communication and strong project management.

Key Challenges

  • Implement the entire software package in 3 years across 15+ modules
  • Avoid use of proprietary programs, SDKs, or frameworks
  • Develop 8 specified modules including HMI editing/playback, graphics/events subsystem, and an OPC UA transport subsystem
  • Support both web and desktop versions for all modules

Project Deliverables

  • Concept and architecture documents
  • HMI module (web and desktop)
  • Desktop versions for charts, events and mnemonic visualization
  • Web versions of modules
  • OPC UA transport component
  • Test methodology and QA
  • Project management and overall system integration

Project Solution

Rubius delivered a three-year, six-stage engagement to develop a SCADA system. They produced concept and design documentation, described architectures for each module, developed the HMI and visualization modules, built desktop and web versions, implemented a transport subsystem component based on the OPC UA standard without using third-party code, prepared test methodology and QA artifacts, and ultimately assumed overall project management and system integration responsibilities. The primary technologies used were C++ and Qt.

Project Outcome

  • The SCADA system was successfully completed and presented to major industrial companies
  • The software outperformed competitors in performance and reliability
  • The solution was adaptable to different manufacturers and industries
  • Modules can operate standalone or integrate into third-party solutions
