Project Summary

Bixlabs provided mobile app developers to assist a marketing and digital agency in redesigning and functionally improving native iOS and Android apps for an insurance client that provides towing coverage for boats. They revamped the UX, repaired and improved a subpar codebase, updated the backend, integrated third-party APIs (AerisWeather) and mapping, and oversaw QA and app store launches. Post-launch, the apps achieved much faster response times and high stability. The engagement ran from November 2017 to May 2018.

Key Challenges

  • Complete a half-finished application under urgent timelines
  • Address a subpar, hard-to-maintain codebase with numerous bugs
  • Improve and reorganize a poorly designed UX
  • Ensure the apps could handle traffic spikes for upcoming marketing efforts

Project Deliverables

  • Redesigned native iOS app
  • Redesigned native Android app
  • Revamped UX and UI
  • Updated backend PHP server internals
  • Integrated AerisWeather REST API for real-time weather and tide updates
  • Added interactive maps (Google Maps and Apple Maps)
  • QA process and app store (App Store & Google Play) launch
  • Post-release maintenance and updates

Project Solution

Bixlabs redesigned the iOS and Android applications, revamped the UX per the agency's specifications, performed maintenance to optimize functionality, and updated parts of the underlying PHP server (internal updates). They integrated a third-party AerisWeather REST API for real-time weather and tide data and added interactive maps (Google Maps and Apple Maps). Their work went through QA and they oversaw launches on the App Store and Google Play, followed by ongoing maintenance updates.

Project Outcome

  • Response times decreased from about 12 seconds to under one second
  • Crash and bug reports dropped to nearly zero
  • Stakeholders reported positive reception and satisfaction with the apps
  • The apps are stable and able to support planned marketing traffic spikes
