Project Summary
Algoworks was hired by GunKeepr LLC to develop mobile and web applications using React.js, Node.js, and blockchain technology, including an API integration with SendGrid. The vendor completed discovery and wireframing but delivered backend code in C# and a non-blockchain database, leaving user data unsecured. The app became unusable after a few months, causing the client to lose most of its prospective users and fail to monetize the business.
Key Challenges
- Needed help with custom code development for web and mobile applications
- Required a secured, blockchain-based database of firearm owners to protect user data
- Needed a theft deterrent and theft recovery process within the app
- Required API integration with SendGrid and use of specific technologies (React.js and Node.js)
Project Deliverables
- Mobile application
- Web application
- Blockchain-based secured database of firearm owners
- Theft deterrent/theft recovery feature
- SendGrid API integration
- Wireframes and discovery documentation
Project Solution
Algoworks led a discovery phase with daily 30–60-minute calls for about six weeks to define and wireframe the product, then proceeded to develop the mobile and web applications. The vendor was tasked to build the apps using React.js and Node.js, implement a blockchain-based secured database of firearm owners, add a theft deterrent/theft recovery process, and integrate SendGrid for communications. The client worked directly with a five-person Algoworks team that included named leaders and paid approximately $61,000 over the engagement period (Aug. 2019–Aug. 2020).
Project Outcome
- App became unusable after a few months and remained nonfunctional for over a year
- Client lost nearly 2,000 potential users; only about 60 signed up and approximately 10 remained long-term
- Client invested approximately $61,000 and faced additional disputed charges for allegedly fraudulent code
- Client is rewriting the platform and considers legal action; the project led to no revenue for three years

Quality of Deliverables
“Algoworks failed to deliver a functional app. The team developed poor code in C# and fraudulently built an unsecured database due to their lack of blockchain development expertise. As a result, the client was unable to use the app, losing the 2,000 potential users they already had.”
